Uasin Gishu doctors have threatened to boycott work if they are not guaranteed security following the murder of a medical intern last week.

Joseph Abuya, chairman of Eldoret's branch of the Kenya Medical Association, said police should act first and bring the killers of Dr Boutrous Mbugua to book.

Speaking to the press at St Luke's Hospital on Monday, Abuya noted this was not the first case.

They singled out Meru, Nakuru and Eldoret where the murders of doctors have been reported yet no arrests have not been made.

"We cannot remain silent," he said. "It is sad when the life of a young, promising doctor is taken in a crude way," said said Faith Ombuk, from the women's cahpter of the association.

"I challenge Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret town to look at the welfare of its intern doctors.''

The doctors complained about difficulties in attending to emergencies, especially at night. They said they always pray that patients remain alive till morning.

Daisy Korir, KMPDU national treasurer, said doctors must live in safe places.

Mbugua

was attacked in his house at Elgon view estate last Sunday.

Korir asked the MTRH administration to consider allowing interns to stay within the hospital compound.

"The hospital should look into the interns' welfare urgently. Staying away from hospital exposes them to risks and makes them targets of heinous acts."

"We understand housing could be a challenge but they should at least be allowed to liv in one place since most interns are young and have no families."

Dr. Korir further called for speedy investigations into Mbugua's death to ensure culprits are punished.

"We've lost a very hardworking doctor who had a brighter future. He was always punctual and did not wait to be pushed around by his supervisors."
