The government should respect rights of civil societies and stop interfering with their operations, Human Rights Watch has said.

"The recent crackdown is part of a wider repression of civil society in Kenya in recent years," HRW said

in a statement on Wednesday.

Rights Watch said the government urgently needs to change course of how they deal with the civil groups in Kenya.

"...and instead of harassing these organizations, they should respect their rights and their role in meaningful dialogue," HRW said.

This was after NGO board

cracked down on rights groups critical of the vote in which president

Uhuru Kenyatta was once again proclaimed the winner.

Fazul Mahamed's

board

banned operations of Kura Yangu Sauti Yangu and We The People.

The executive director said in a letter dated November 6 that the organisations got Sh36 million

from the George Soros Foundation.

He further accuses KYSY and We The People of opening

and operating illegal accounts with NIC and Citi banks, against section 12(4) of NGOs Coordination Act, 1990.
