Ruth Odinga, Fred Outa charged with incitement to violence

Kisumu Senator Fred Outa and Ruth Odinga have been charged with incitement to violence and malicious damage to property.

They denied five counts before Kisumu chief magistrate Julius Ng'arng'ar and were released on a Sh500,000 bond each with no surety.

Outa and Ruth are accused of stealing 94 plastic chairs and 11 tent stands worth Sh92,500 belonging to Tausi Designs and Promotion Ltd.

They were also accused of entering an electoral area designated by IEBC contrary to the Election Offences Act, 2016.

The Opposition politicians were also charged with obstructing an election officer and chasing away persons undergoing training by the IEBC for Thursday's presidential election.

Outa faced an additional charge of incitement to violence.

He is said to have uttered "demolish and destroy this IEBC equipment and tents".

Ruth is accused of leading youths to disrupt an IEBC training session in Kisumu.

The two were arrested last Wednesday.

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, deputy Governor Mathews Owili and county chief of staff Patrick Ouya attended the court session in solidarity with the politicians.

Outa and Ruth told journalists outside the court that they will stand firm and defend the constitution.

"We must remain stand firm to safeguard the gains made under the Constitution. We also thank you for your massive support to us," the Senator said.

The matter will be heard on November 13.

Earlier in the morning, Kondele MCA Joachim Oketch and Francis Muga were charged with stealing and malicious damage to property at a Kericho court.

They were released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 each.

Oketch was arrested on Saturday night while Muga was arrested on Friday night by flying squad officers over links to the disruption of training of poll officials.
