Leaders condole with families, friends of chopper crash victims

Leaders and politicians across the political divide have sent their condolences to the families of those who perished

in the plane

crash in Lake Nakuru on Saturday morning.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said he was deeply saddened by the death of the five young Kenyans that has left the nation in shock.

"I was personally known to the pilot who has flown me on many occasions, a truly dedicated serviceman who served this great nation selflessly," Sonko said in a statement.

"Some have been personal friends for a long time, and were true patriots and dedicated servants of the people," he said of the other victims.

The governor described the deceased as ardent supporters of President Uhuru Kenyatta who worked tirelessly in the last and the ongoing campaigns.

The chopper came down at 7am moments after leaving

Jarika Hotel, Nakuru,

for a Jubilee rally in

Narok.

The names of the victims have been given as Anthony Kipyegon, Sammy Gitau, John Mapozi, Apollo Maloa (pilot) and a lady identified only as Veronicah.

Three of them were members of

Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika's media team.

"Their demise is a big blow to their families, friends, the Jubilee family and Kenya as a whole," Sonko said.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui also condoled with the families and friends.

"The loss of these five Kenyans is truly a big blow to the youth of this country. It is my hope that their lives shall inspire many more to dedicate their lives in serving Kenya and humanity in general," Kinyanjui said.

"I pray to God to guide and encourage you during this difficult moment. We share in your pain and loss," he added.

Nakuru Woman Rep Liza Chelule expressed optimism that the recovery exercise will be fruitful on Sunday.

"These were young and talented youths who had a bright future. We pray that God gives them comfort," Chelule said.

The recovery operation was suspended on Saturday evening after divers failed to locate the spot where the helicopter crashed.
