A newborn baby was rescued alive from a public toilet in Kitengela on Friday.

The mother Faith Ndinda was arrested while hiding in a friend's rented house after allegedly dumping the baby in the toilet.

Ndinda, a second year university student, was taken to the area police post by area assistant chief Agnes Sayia.

The infant was rushed to Galaxy Medical Centre in Koromboi area for treatment.

David Musila, a doctor, said the infant will require specialised care in an incubator since it is underweight.

"It suffered bruises on its back and neck. Most probably occurred when the mother was pushing it into the toilet," he said in his written brief.

Musila said the baby was retrieved after floating in the used toilet for close to 45 minutes.

“We did the cleaning of the umbilical cord and all over the body and recommended that it be taken to Kenyatta [National Hospital],” he added.

Police said Ndinda will be charged with attempting to kill her infant.

She is among students who were sent home after riots at their university on Wednesday.
