NASA MPs want IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati to resign to pave way for "drastic reforms in the commission" before the repeat presidential election.

Chebukati did not quit on Wednesday in an address that followed commissioner Roselyne Akombe's resignation.

But he acknowledged it is difficult to assure a free election in the race whose top candidates are incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA principal Raila Odinga.

MPs Opiyo Wandayi (Unguja) and Elisha Odhiambo (Gem) said they want Chebukati to resign to save Kenya from a "looming crisis".

Wandayi said that after Akombe's revelations, the commission should be bold enough to confess it is not capable to conduct a free and fair poll next week.

"Chebukati has an opportunity to save this country from crisis. The commission, as currently constituted, lacks moral and legal credibility. He should tender his resignation immediately to give Kenyans room to go back to the drawing board," he said at Parliament buildings.

The legislator further said the chairman intended to resign last week "but was stopped by state agents".

"Chebukati has been under siege because of the veto powers of the four commissioners and the CEO who are serving their masters. Akombe has now confirmed to the world what we as NASA have been agitating for," he said.

He did not substantiate this claim.

The MP added: "Any attempts to include the names of Raila and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka on the ballot will be met with a lot of resistance by Kenyans. The international community should be impartial and know there is a catastrophe in waiting."

Odhiambo said the crisis at IEBC prompted Akombe to resign and added the agency cannot hold a credible poll as directed by the constitution and the September 1 Supreme Court ruling.

"The October 26 election is going to be a mirage. Jubilee leaders must think again and NASA should not go for any negotiation for a nusu mkate government."

The MPs also alleged CEO Ezra Chiloba and four other commissioners have been favouring the Jubilee administration and have put the chairman under siege.

NASA wants Chiloba and several other secretariat members for allegedly interfering with the August 8 vote. Chiloba has said he will not resign as he is busy preparing for the rerun.

The other commissioners are Consolata Nkatha, Bucha Maina, Boya Molu, Paul Kurgat, Margaret Wanjala and Abdi Guliye.

The commission, Jubilee, Safaricom and ballot papers printer Al Ghurair have denied helping Uhuru to win.
