NASA and Jubilee supporters clashed at Laare stadium on Tuesday ahead of a rally by Raila Odinga and Musalia Mudavadi.

The rally will take place in

Igembe North constituency, Meru county.

Jubilee supporters lit fires, blocked the entrance to the stadium and set a podium on fire after it was prepared for Opposition leaders

It is said the group was opposed to NASA chief Raila Odinga's calls for

anti-IEBC demonstrations.

The factions

hurled stones at each other and engaged in running battles, forcing police to fire teargas to disperse them.

No injuries were reported during the clash that took place a short while before Raila's expected time of arrival.

The platform was later set up - using metal bars instead of wood this time round - and six police officers deployed to the scene.

NASA's former Meru point man Mike Mutembei on Monday urged the ODM leader to pay the more than 3,000 agents who presided over the August 8 polls.

Political pundits say NASA's support, that had been surging due in the area, has plummeted after Mutembei and former Meru Governor Peter Munya jumped ship.

The area is known for miraa farming and NASA has been capitalising on the dwindling fortunes of 'green gold' to make political gains.

On previous tours to the country, the former premier has told residents Jubilee has not done enough for them.

He cited the UK ban on miraa traders, which President Uhuru Kenyatta wants lifted.

During a visit in May, Uhuru

asked Prime Minister Theresa May to extend technical cooperation and financial assistance to

growing areas.

This, he said, will enable diversification and minimise negative effects of the export ban to the UK imposed three years ago.
