after its supporters clashed with Jubilee's.

The two dissenting groups fought ahead of the meeting which was to be addressed by Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi and other Opposition leaders.

The warring factions engaged in stone throwing and running battles before police intervened and dispersed them.

The Opposition team was to catch a plane to Meru before news about the chaos reached them.

Raila accused the area OCPD, identified only as Mr Kimani of

orchestrating the chaos with area OCS - a Mr Wamae.

In a press briefing at

Wilson Airport in Nairobi, he said:

"This is what we call state-sponsored thuggery."

Mudavadi said: "We have campaigned in Meru for decades and we know the people well. We know the level of support among residents.

"Jubilee is ever-scared of an open, free and fair contest and is determined to lock certain parts of the country and purport to declare them no-go-zones for the Opposition."

NASA coordinator in Meru Fredrick Mwirigi said goons the goons were hired elsewhere to disrupt the rally.

"They are not people from Laare. They have been hired from as far as Meru town to make sure the meeting does not take place," he said.

Raila, however, said their resolve to advance their agenda for free and fair elections will not be dampened through intimidation by the Jubilee administration.

"We have other plans. Tomorrow (Wednesday) we are going to have a rally at Kamkunji grounds and on Thursday we will go to Turkana county," the ODM leader said.

"On Friday, we will have a mourning session for victims of police brutality," he said of the event which will coincide with Mashujaa Day celebrations.

He noted the coalition will hold the event in remembrance of people killed during anti-IEBC demos in Bondo and Kisumu over the past few days.

"There is going to be a service for their souls on Friday. Instead of celebrating Mashujaa Day, we are going to be mourning these young Kenyans whose lives have been cut short by anuncaring, angry bloodthirsty government," Raila said.

The Opposition chief further said they will hold rallies in different parts of the country on Saturday and Sunday.

Raila reiterated his stance that he will not participate in the October 26 repeat polls.

"We are very very clear about what we want. We said we don't want to go to an election

without reforms. We don't want to escort Jubilee to the alter."
