One person died and two others sustained serious injuries on Tuesday, after a matatu rammed into an oncoming motorcycle in Soweto, at a diversion next to the Mumias-Bungoma highway.

The casualties were all riding on the boda boda. Those in the matatu were not injured. The boda boda rider was ferrying two women — National Youth Service employees — who were on their way home after a clean-up at the Harambee shopping centre.

One of the women died on spot and her body was taken to St Mary’s Hospital mortuary. The rider and the other woman were rushed to the hospital.

There is ongoing construction of a bridge so vehicles use the narrow diversion.

The Bungoma-bound PSV was from Mumias. The driver was overtaking a lorry, leading to a head-on collision.
