More than 25 learning institutions participated in this year’s Nyeri Hospice Charity Walk on Saturday.

The 10km walk was aimed at raising funds to assist those suffering from cancer and other terminal illnesses.

The participants (pictured) included students from primary and secondary schools, universities and colleges.

The walk was flagged off by Nyeri Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga.

Nyeri Hospice director Joyce Munira said the facility is targeting learners to educate them about cancer.

She said students and pupils are good ambassadors, who can help bring their parents and other people on board to assist the facility and urge the sick to seek treatment.

“The walk has been successful in the past. We do not admit patients, but give them home-based care and relatives a shoulder to lean on,” Munira said.

Other than offering home-based care to cancer patients, the institution also extends similar assistance to those suffering from other illnesses such as diabetes and stroke. Father Elias Mutahi, a board member, said the facility holds various activities annually, including the annual walk every third week of September and a golf tournament in March.
