A former university student has been arrested on suspicion of being the ring leader of a gang targeting M-Pesa shops in several towns.

Nixon Kipkoech, who dropped out at third year, was arrested in in Mwanzo Estate, Eldoret, at

a house reportedly used as a hideout

Eldoret West police boss Samuel Mutunga said he is part of a gang linked to thefts in M-Pesa shops in Machakos, Nakuru, Kakamega and Kitale.

He said Kipkoech had been charged in Kakamega and released on bond yet he carried on with the criminal activities.

Two women said to be part of the gang escaped and are being sought by police.

"They use mobile phones numbers and stolen IDs to steal cash from the shops. We have been after them," Mutunga said.

He said they recovered some of the IDs and mobile phones.

The arrest comes just two months after area police arrested members of another gang involved in similar thefts.
