Armed raiders on Friday shot dead two pupils and seriously injured one man during an ambush targeting Marakwet East locals.

The two children, both aged 15 years, were learning at Maros primary school.

The attack was executed by suspected cattle rustlers at the border of Marakwet East and Pokot South at around 5am.

The raiders made away with ten cows and 50 goats and an unknown number of sheep.

This came two days after a man was shot dead at Kaptet village by bandits believed to have come from the neighboring community.

But Pokot Central deputy county commissioner Geoffrey Kithinji said the two died after Pokots and Marakwets illegally residing in the forest attacked each other.

"Residents from the two communities have illegal fire arms and attack each other more often," he said.

He said the region was tense after the incident adding that the police were deployed to restore order.

"It is hard for police officers to enter the forest. We have sent police reservists who understand the area well."

He added that there is no road in the area, a situation he said made posed difficulties for the police to collect the bodies.

Kithinji said the affected people are supposed to be removed from the forest as they settled in the area illegally.

"The place is over ten kilometers deep into the forest. We had advised them to be herding their cows outside the forest."

He said the injured person is recuperating at Cherangany nursing home in Kitale.

Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong condemned the incident terming it inhumane.

"We cannot afford to lose people anyhow. We need peace to prevail in the area for development to be realised," he said.
