The government has refuted claims of an anthrax outbreak in Thika.

Although, it says eight people suspected to be infected are admitted to Thika Level 5 hospital.

In a statement on Thursday, Kiambu Health CEC Jonah Mwangi said the patients have been isolated awaiting results of tissue sample tests.

The affected patients are meat transporters at Thika municipal slaughterhouse.

This means the disease must have already spread should the lab samples test positive.

However, Dr Mwangi dispelled fears of an outbreak saying none of the remaining 20 employees at the facility have exhibited symptoms of the disease.

"We wish to inform the public that all animals coming to the Thika slaughterhouse are inspected by veterinary officers before slaughter."

"A comprehensive post-slaughter inspection is also conducted by the county meat inspectors," Mwangi said.

Anthrax is a life-threatening disease that normally affects animals especially ruminants.

It can be transmitted to humans by contact with infected animals or their products.

Mwangi said the abattoir has been closed indefinitely pending further investigations by the disease surveillance team.

The team will work with public health directorate and the directorate of veterinary services.

"The building will be disinfected and will remain closed until Monday, May 15."

The health executive added that as a precautionary measure, licenses of meat transporters from the slaughter house have also been suspended.

"We are also issuing a stern warning that all meat transporters handling uninspected meat will be prosecuted and their licences revoked," he said.

The CEC urged the public to buy meat only from licensed butcheries and ensure meat and meat products are properly cooked.
