Siaya county government will spend Sh372 million as a send-off package for 248 former councilors, deputy governor Ouma Onyango has said.

He said on Monday that each councillor will receive Sh1.5 million before the end of the year.

At a later period, councillor's will receive a monthly allowance of Sh30,000, which will cost the county government Sh892.8 million annually.

"We must care for your retired leaders financially as they are considered heroes. We cannot allow them to die of hunger as that will not be the way to appreciate them," Onyango said.

The deputy Governor said the county government is aware of the economic difficulties facing defunct officials but clarified that those in active politics will not be considered.

He also said former councillors who qualify in different fields may be absorbed in various positions in the county government to facilitate service delivery.

The gratuity comes after a petition by Siaya councillors led by Obede Ombere who petitioned the county government.

Ombere asked the county to consider their plight as pioneers and ensure that they mate daily basic needs by being awarded a befitting send-off package.
