Blood cancer is the highest type of cancer among children admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital, a medic has said.

KNH nematologist Walter Mwanda said 61 per cent of children undergoing cancer treatment at the referral facility suffer from acute leukemia.

“This trend is different in other parts of the country, such as Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley and the Coast,” Mwanda said.

He was speaking during the marking of the International Childhood Cancer Day at KNH on Monday.

Mwanda said some challenges identified during cancer advocacy in Africa were competing public health priorities, financial barriers, low awareness, societal norms and cultural beliefs.

He said cancer registries should provide accurate and complete cancer data for advocacy.
