KRA has

intercepted two containers of illegal milk powder declared as

gypsum board

at the Port of Mombasa.

The taxman said in a statement on Tuesday that

the goods arrived on October 1 aboard MV Marie Delmas.

The authority said its officers baseda at the port profiled and targeted the containers -

No. SEGU4628096 and TCLU1505551 -

on October 17.

Port officials said the containers were scanned two days later, images confirming they were loaded with milk powder.

The goods, according to documents presented by the shipping agent, were supplied by RIA IMPO Exporters of United Arab Emirates.

They were destined for TIRUMALA Enterprises in Kampala, Uganda.

Milk powder is considered a sensitive commodity under the EAC Common External Tariff (CET) and attracts import duty at a rate of 60 per cent.

KRA said the government would have lost about Sh14 million in taxes had the perpetrators managed to the sneak the powder into the market.

The authority ordered 100 per cent physical verification of the contents, in the presence of other government agencies.

"The authority is working in collaboration with Uganda Revenue Authority officials to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted," read the statement.
