Blogger Robert Alai acquitted over EACC boss degree post

Blogger Robert Alai has been acquitted in a case where he was charged with posting an offensive message on Twitter.

Senior principal magistrate Martha Mutuku withdrew the matter under Section 87(A) of the penal code on Thursday.

The development means that the blogger can only be re-arrested if new evidence is found in pursuit of the matter.

Such prerogative rests with the director of public prosecutions.

Alai had claimed that EACC director Halakhe Waqo had a fake University of Nairobi degree which he used to ascend to office.

He and was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000.

is accused of posting on his Twitter account a message intended to annoy Waqo regarding his education credentials.

The blogger allegedly posted a message on Twitter on November 18 last year, reading: “How do you expect EACC to arrest anyone for corruption when its head (Waqo) used a forged UoN degree certificate to get into his office?”.

The blogger allegedly posted that he was not going to relent on the matter whether in jail or out.
