The Communications Authority of Kenya has warned that 25 per cent of internet users in the country are unsupervised teenage children exposed to evolving cyber crimes.

This has been attributed to the easy access to mobile phones, hand held devices and the increasing number of locations with free WI-FI.

The regulator has together with various stakeholders implemented a Child Online Protection Campaign dubbed ‘Be The Cop’ aimed at educating the masses on tips to protect children.

The campaign will also give guidelines to children and the youth on how to protect themselves while using the internet.

Chairman Ngene Gituku says cyber space vulnerabilities will need to be addressed at policy level by all stakeholders and service providers as well as through community inspired actions.

“We have adopted the ITU guidelines on Child Online Protection as these guidelines are based on a multi-stakeholder effort within the Global Cyber-security Agenda framework geared towards creating a safer online experience for children,” Gituku said.
