A Western MP has threatened to name politicians from the region whom he has accused of playing key roles in the smuggling of contraband sugar into the country.
Bumula MP Bonface Otsiula claimed the politicians have blocked a 2015 report on what's ailing the sugar sector from being made public.
Otsiula said he will ensure the report is made public in five weeks "so we know who are messing with the lives of more than 10 million Kenyans who depend on sugarcane farming".
"My friend Musalia Mudavadi [Amani leader] complained about this last week. If the report is
not made public, we, as leaders from this region, have failed to help sugarcane farmers who continue to live miserably," he said.
"We want this report to be released as soon as possible so that we know those who robbed Mumias, Nzoia and other sugar companies."
Speaking in the constituency at the weekend, Otsiula noted that the government has been working at reviving the industry by digging into the reason for its collapse for purposes of finding a lasting solution.
"While we are trying to push for Mumias Sugar to obtain Sh2 billion more, we must know what happened because even doctors examine patients before treating them," he said.
He said a section of politicians from the region have asked National Assembly leader Aden Duale and Speaker Justin Muturi to ensure MPs debate the report and ensure it goes public.
