MORE than 4,000 households have been infested by bedbugs in Nakuru town in a public health “disaster”.

County public health officer Samuel King’ori yesterday said the most affected areas are Kivumbini, Rhonda, Shabaab and Kaptembwo estates.

“This is a disaster because the affected families have been having sleepless nights due to the irritation caused by bedbugs. The children have been the most affected,” he said.

King’ori was speaking in his office.

“We have so far sprayed more than 1,000 households in Kaptembwo and Shabaab,” he said.

The bedbugs have spread due to the dense population and crowding in the houses.

King’ori said hospitals, schools and children’s homes have also been infested.

He said the department of public health has enough equipment for fumigation, which they carry out in hotels and boarding schools.

King’ori said matatus will be fumigated.

“We normally spray in phases. We do the second spraying after a week to ensure all the bedbug eggs have destroyed. We fumigate for free,” he said.

King’ori said the county expects to spend about Sh20,000 in the exercise, which is expected to end in October..

He urged the public to take precaution to avoid infestation.
