Not much hope for my Gunners but, my oh my, what has LVG done?

So Arsene Wenger let the transfer market go by just like that; without buying that striker we so badly needed. And yes it’s pretty obvious what that means; that we’ll be struggling for goals all season long and that we should just kiss the Champions League goodbye for starters. I’ll accept that now to avoid disappointment later in the season. Winning the league though will depend on injuries and when they happen; because they will. We have a decent squad at Emirates but it’s when injuries set in that back up cover just isn’t adequate. And injuries will set in towards the end of a first half of the season. I’m a little deflated but hey, I’m a Gunner! We thrive on being resilient! I want to talk a bit about Manchester United and what manager Louis Van Gaal has been doing there. He’s spent more than £250 million since he joined last year but has little to show for it in terms of world class players. Yes Memphis Depay is a name and it doesn’t get bigger than Bastian Schweinsteiger. Morgan Schneiderlin has been proven in the league while Anthony Martial has potential, but a lot of the money was spent buying the likes of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao who have since left with little impact on Man United. Martial isn’t proven for the amount he cost United and the player himself has said he doesn’t believe he is worth his fee. That isn’t how they want to be moving into the second month of the season with just two wins out of four games played under their belts. A team as big as United should be feeling confident going into the future but if I were a Red Devil, I wouldn’t be that smug right now. A manager as big as Louis Van Gaal should not have needed a trial and error period as he has had over the past 14 months or so, but that’s exactly what he’s had; a very expensive trial period and a team that isn’t performing as well as it should. Wayne Rooney has one game under his belt as a central striker; and that’s probably the best thing United has going for them. I think that was a move that was long overdue. But as much as they had decent talent in other areas all last season, LVG failed to get the best out of his talent. How can such a great manager fail to win anything with Di Maria, Falcao and RVP; and yet he has had to let all of them leave. Now he has Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Depay, and 19 year old Martial and he expects to re-invent the wheel. It is unfortunate for the rest of us though that the David de Gea transfer didn’t go through because we have to contend with his genius for at least another couple of months; but overall I’m afraid I don’t see much coming out of Old Trafford this term. If there’s a team I fear now, it’s Manchester City and that’s it. Chelsea bought a new bus over the last seven days so their fortunes might change, but as of now, I don’t fear them and I certainly don’t fear Man United. Arsenal right now are looking at finishing second behind City; but the real problem will come in Europe; during the round of sixteen. That’s my assessment of how the season is likely to go from an Arsenal point of view, given how all the big teams behaved during the transfer market.
