and 12 arrested in a botched raid “for sex” on a girls’ school on Saturday night. Forty boys from St Patrick’s Iten High trekked for six kilometres and raided Sing’ore Girls Secondary School.

The boys sneaked into the girls’ dormitory but some of the girls started wailing. There was commotion as the boys started running for cover, and some of them were injured. Police recovered six packets of condoms at the Sing’ore dormitory after the raid on Saturday night.

Both schools are in Elgeyo Marakwet county. Ironically, on Saturday, principal Rose Kemboi was in Nairobi to receive a good performance award for Sing’ore Girls. A search conducted at St Patrick’s that night revealed most of the boys missing are form three and four students.

Keiyo North subcounty police boss Fredrick Ochieng said they are investigating. “We rushed to the school after receiving calls that thugs raided the girls’ school only to discover that it was actually boys from the neighbouring school,” Ochieng said.

Investigations show that some of the girls invited the boys to their school by phone. One boy is admitted at the Iten County Teaching and Referral Hospital, where others were treated and discharged. He was hit on the leg by a watchman during the commotion.

Police who were heading to the girls school met with some of the boys as they walked back to their school. “Our officers rounded them up and managed to arrest 12 while others escaped.

We have locked them up in the cells,” Ochieng said. County Education director Sabina Aroni summoned principals Wilson Yego of St Patrick’s and Kemboi to explain the matter.

“We are handling the matter internally,” Yego said on the phone yesterday. Police said the arrested boys admitted having gone to the girl’s school on invitation by the girls. Some of them said going to the girls’ school was a routine.
