Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has been ranked 5th best airport in Africa during the 2014 Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Service Quality Awards (ASQ).

JKIA was awarded for its excellence in customer service in the survey carried out in over 300 airports worldwide and collected customers' experiences at contact points.

Mauritius was ranked as the best airport in customer service in Africa, then Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The ACI benchmarking program allows airports to compare their customer services against each other.

"The ACI ASQ Survey has reliably captured passengers’ immediate appraisal from check-in through departure at the gate at more than 300 airports worldwide," the firm said in a statement.

The award comes at a time when JKIA has been expanding and modernising its terminals to improve security and service delivery.

Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director, Lucy Mbugua, said that the upgrading would position JKIA as a regional hub.

"We expect even further growth going forward as more capacity is unlocked by on-going works, which will improve level of service, security and controlled access to meet international standards, thus taking advantage of its strategic location of JKIA to position it as the premier aviation hub of Africa,” she said.

JKIA currently handles about 6.5 million passengers annually. The expansion will enable the airport to serve one million more passengers annually.

A second terminal is expected to begin operations at the end of this month.
