Last week, a number of Chess Kenya (CK) officials and select players attended a 1 day seminar ‘We want our sports back-towards accountable governance and management of sports in Kenya’, at Strathmore University, conducted by the Centre for Multi-Party Democracy (CMD) and Sports International.

Geared towards making sports organizations and federations function properly, the topics covered included sports management, leadership and corporate governance plus legal framework and good governance in sports. The participants, who also included representatives from Archery Kenya (AK) and Scrabble Kenya (SK), greatly benefited from this initiative and vowed to transform their federations with the invaluable knowledge gained.

Meanwhile, the schools qualifiers for the World Youth Chess Championship (WYCC) for Nairobi and Mt. Kenya regions will take place on  July 5-6 at Alliance High School, Kikuyu and St. Mary’s High School in Nyeri respectively.

However, during a stormy CK Special General Meeting (SGM) on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium, members were deeply divided over the clause in the constitution that expressly states that ‘the national junior team players must come from national inter-schools competition’, with some wanting it to be expunged claiming that it could lock out talented kids who don’t attended the formal school setup and would otherwise qualify from an open tournament.

CK argued that their Kasparov Chess Foundation (KCF)-backed Chess in Schools program is hinged on this clause, which in effect only allows kids who come in a school team to play, as opposed to individuals, as has been the norm.

It is hoped that the items on the agenda which ended up not being conclusively addressed, shall be tackled during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held by July 20.
