ALL teachers will be retired at 60 years starting January 1.

The new circular was posted on the Teachers Service Commission website on Friday.

It will ease growing controversies over teachers’ retirement terms.

The commission has been at loggerheads with the Ministry of Education and teachers’ unions over its decision to extend contracts of teachers who surpassed retirement age.

TSC said in a circular dated July 1 posted on their website and sent to TSC county directors yesterday it is mandatory for teachers to retire at 60.

It said retention of servants beyond their retirement dates poses wage bill sustainability challenges.

“In adherence to the new directive, the commission will retire teachers on the dates they attain 60 years of age whether it will be in the middle of the terms or otherwise,” TSC secretary Gabriel Lengoiboni says in the circular.

Initially the commission retired teachers in batches corresponding with the start of school term—January 1, May 1 and September 1 each year.

“A list of teachers due to retire will be provided to you one year in advance,” he said.

The retirement policy by TSC comes amidst reports that the head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua has called for investigations on the extension of contracts to teachers above 60 years contrary to his directive issued in February directing PSs and other accounting officers to retire workers aged 60.
