ITEN-based Elijah Tirop clocked 46:28:20 to win the sixth edition of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga 12-km road race in Bondo over the weekend.
Tirop, hitherto a novice, walked home the Sh50,000 winning prize. In an interview, Tirop said he will build on the win to jump-start his career.
“When I came here, I did not expect to win. Now I’m Sh50,000 richer. This should be a launching pad to my career,” he added. He said the course was good but the weather was erratic.
Isaac Lagat from Kericho came in second after timing 47:08:96 while Bernard Chemugo of Uasin Gishu was third in 47:16:26. Two-time world junior cross country champion Phillip Mosima who was a pre-race favourite finished fourth in 47:17:44 with Eliud Kipchumba fifth in 47:36:28.
In the women’s category Mildred Chebosis from Rongai claimed the title after clocking 54:35:00. She was closely followed by Damaris Areba from Kisii in 54:56:50 while team-mate Jane Moraa was third in 55:37:79. In the local category, Quinter Akinyi from Bondo won the race followed by Irene Adhiambo and Eunice Akoth in the second and third respectively. Joseph Okello was the top local man followed by Ezekiel Oduol and Alloys Otieno.
