The Speaker of National Assembly Kenneth Marende has ordered the ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate claims that some of its officers have been colluding with local and international agents to airlift young women to Saudi Arabia to work as domestic workers where they end as slaves.
Marende directed that the ministry conduct the probe that some ministry officials were collecting monies from agents to send Kenyans to slavery Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries. The Speaker said the ministry should report back to Parliament in the next 14 days.
The matter came to the House though a question by William Kabogo (Juja). The MP has been pursuing the ministry to have a Kenyan girl who is reportedly detained by her employer in Saudi Arabia rescued.
Kabogo told the House that the girl, Rosemary Wariera, had earlier complained of being detained and mistreatment by her employer.
Kabogo complained that despite furnishing the ministry with finer details of the girl’s whereabouts including the mobile number of the employer in Saudi Arabia, the government has not acted.
Kabogo said he was ready to airlift the minister to Saudi Arabia to rescue the girl, an offer which Foreign affairs assistant minister Richard Onyonka accepted. Onyonka said he will travel soon.
