Homa Bay governor Gladys Wanga on Wednesday led residents in lighting candles to commemorate those who lost their lives during anti-government protests.
This is after a call from Azimio to hold a vigil for those who were killed during the past protests.
Wanga said that Kenyans should not lose their lives because of exercising their rights.
"No Kenyan should ever lose their life for exercising their constitutional right to protest, peaceably and unarmed. We joined the rest of Kenyans in a vigil to commemorate these lives and condolence with families across the nation mourning loved ones," she said.
Azimio decided to call off demonstrations that were supposed to take place today (Wednesday).
They said the new development was after carrying out an operation, which is yet to be completed and entails summing up the number of deceased persons and injuries from the past demos.
"During the vigils, candle lighting, and laying of flowers, we encourage Kenyans to say prayers and read out the names of the victims of police brutality," the outfit said.
"We ask the religious leaders and the people of Kenya to extend this important exercise by dedicating Friday, Saturday and Sunday for prayers in remembrance of the victims of police brutality during the past peaceful demonstrations."
