All Kakamega subcounties to have recreational centres

Kakamega county will establish recreational centres to nurture talents among the youths.

Governor Fernandes Barasa Monday said his administration will set up the facilities which will also double as centres of excellence in all the 12 constituencies in the county.

“The county has a specific agenda to nurture sporting talents. Kakamega county has invested a lot of money in empowering the youth and nurturing talents,” he said.

Barasa was speaking at Koyonzo Secondary in Matungu subcounty when he visited the school to congratulate the rugby team for emerging national schools champions in the schools ball games that ended last week.

Koyonzo are also the East Africa Secondary Schools’ rugby runners up.

Barasa said his administration will pay school fees for the Koyonzo rugby players with fees problems.

The governor said he will revive the governor’s soccer cup that stalled a year after its inauguration in 2014 during former governor Wycliffe Oparanya's tenure and launch the governor’s rugby cap competitions.

The county instead chose to support premier league with Kakamega Homeboyz drawing over Sh10 million annually from the county.

Barasa said the recreational centre for Matungu will be built this financial year.

He said his administration will complete all flagship projects started by Oparanya including the upgrading of Bukhungu stadium to international standards.

Other mega projects that await completion by the Barasa regime include the completion of the handing over of the Sh6.2 billion Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital to the national government, Malava milk processing plant, Mandala tea factory in Shinyalu and completion of Shamakhubu Level 4 hospital.

He said his government had set aside Sh25 million for education scholarships for bright and needy students.

He said the county had set aside another Sh20 million to support university education.

During his campaigns, Barasa promised to empower the youth to address unemployment.
