Three people died on the spot while three others sustained serious injuries after they were involved in a grisly road accident in the Mukhuyu area in Mt. Elgon Constituency, Bungoma county.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Hellen Kitai, who lives near the scene of the accident, told the media that the accident happened on Thursday at midnight.

The lorry ferrying cabbage and Irish potatoes from Mt. Elgon was involved in an accident around the Mukhuyu area.

“This place has been a black spot. Many accidents have happened here. My plea to the relevant authority is to let them move with speed and erect bumps that will make drivers slow down when using the road."

“We were woken up by a blast that was heard by residents who rushed to the scene to check what had happened,” he said.

Kitai added that on reaching the scene, they found three bodies lying in a pool of blood.

She said they made efforts and called the area Sub- Chief and informed him about the tragedy.

She noted that the lorry was carrying two passengers in the front and two at the back.

Those who sustained injuries were taken to Kopsiro Hospital for immediate medical attention.

The bodies were ferried to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary by police officers from Kopsiro police station for preservation.

“Persons who were involved in an accident are strangers to us. Families with relatives doing business in Mt Elgon should visit Bungoma County mortuary and Kopsiro hospital to identify if their loved ones are among the victims,” she said.

Samuel Wafula, a resident told the Star the accident has left many in a great shock asking NTSA and other relevant authorities to erect bumps on the road arguing the area has been a black spot.

“Bishops should organize and have prayers to cleanse this area. We have lost our loved ones and we won’t allow it to continue like this,” he said.
