Vihiga concludes two-week climate change awareness training

The Vihiga government has concluded a two-week climate change mitigation awareness training across the county.

The programme was in partnership with Christian Aid and Anglican Service Western.

Vihiga's Environment officer Richard Boiyo said the programme involved induction training of the newly established ward climate change planning committees that cut across the 25 wards.

The committees were ordered by Governor Wilber Ottichilo as per article 19 of the Vihiga County Climate Change Fund Act, 2019.

The officer said members of the committees were taken through the basic concept of climate change, roles of counties in climate change and functions of ward climate change planning committees.

The committee members were also trained on proposal writing, climate change project cycle, operation procedures, project implementation and finance management.

“The members also shared effects of climate change within their respective wards. They also proposed amicable mitigation measures to be considered by experts while implementing climate change investments,” Boiyo said.

He said the funding will be coming direct to the committees to help in the climate mitigation activities.

Boiyo said climate change mitigation can only be achieved if residents are directly involved.

The officer said the established committees will do a wonderful job in fighting effects of climate change.

“I am hopeful that the established climate change committees across the 25 wards in the county will play a crucial role in climate change mitigation,” Boiyo said.
