Friends Moi Boys High School Kaptama in Bungoma has been closed indefinitely following student unrest.
Students on Monday morning marched peacefully from the school to the deputy county commissioner and education offices in Kapsokwony complaining of 'high-handedness' by deputy principal Christopher Nzabayi. They claimed that he doesn't listen to them.
Nzabayi declined to comment on the matter, saying it was being handled by his superiors.
"I have no comment for now. My bosses are better placed to comment," he said.
After a long consultative meeting with education stakeholders in the region, the school management decided to close the institution until further notice.
"We have resolved that students in Form 1 to 3 go home until further notice. For Form 4s, who are sitting their joint exams, they will have to remain in school and continue with their test and revision for the national exam," school principal Tobias Otieno said.
Assistant county commissioner Patrick Rotino urged the students to remain calm as their grievances have been heard and action will be taken soon.
"We are addressing your issues. We promise to come up with a lasting solution, so please be disciplined. We are here for you," he said.
Kenya Secondary School Heads Association-Mt Elgon subcounty chairman Cheshari Kimtai lauded the students for airing their grievances in a peaceful manner.
Subcounty director of education Etyang Donald praised the students for not destroying school property but faulted them for wasting a whole day that would have otherwise been spent in preparing for the final exam. He, however, assured them that action will be taken soon.
