Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati has asked his political opponents to stop politicising education support for needy students.

Wangamati also urged people to confirm the status of bursary allocation in terms of whether an applicant qualified and if not, confirm the reasons before raising claims of mismanagement of the bursary fund.

The governor was responding to allegations that a student who attained 401 in her KCPE exams was denied bursary on tribal grounds.

He refuted claims Dinah Nyaboke who sat her KCPE exam at Bungoma DEB Primary School was discriminated against based on ethnicity.

Instead, he said, Nyaboke had been placed on a special county bursary programme and her name appeared first on the Township ward list.

“This story doing rounds on social media over allegations that Dinah missed out on the governor’s scholarship is a total lie. I want to clear the air by saying she is on my governor's special bursary and her fees will be fully paid,” he said.

He said the confusion was brought about by the original assessors who claimed her mother was financially able to support her education.

Wangamati added that the vetting committee had earlier on received information that Nyaboke's mother is well off and that is why they decided to interrogate the matter further before concluding.

“The people who sent us information concerning Dinah’s family were wrong and after investigations, Dinah has now been moved to full governor’s scholarship under my watch,” Wangamati stated, adding that she will be funded up to university level.

Wangamati urged parents from the subcounties to be patient and wait for the confirmation message from the Education department.

He asked parents who are not sure if their children are on the list to contact the Education department before making false allegations.
