Some primary and secondary schools in Kakamega will have extra classes, dining halls and kitchens when they reopen after the Covid-19 enforced recess.
Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is leading a drive to improve infrastructure in schools with shortages of facilities for learners.
Oparanya has mobilised schools alumni and some of his county executives to construct a storey classroom block for Mabole Primary School.
“Together with other former students and friends, we are constructing a Sh40 million storey building at the primary section. This will help in the expansion of pupils’ enrolment and boost the quality of education at the school,” he said.
The county chief said he asked former pupils of the school and friends to help in the initiative as a way of giving back to society.
“I encourage all county officials to borrow a leaf from this initiative and use their own money to start such initiatives,” he said at the launch of the construction.
The governor is also constructing a modern dining hall and kitchen at Mabole Boys High School in Butere.
“Mabole High School will also benefit from a Sh10 million modern dining hall,” he said.
Collins Matemba, the county executive for Transport, Infrastructure, Public Works and Energy funded the construction of two classrooms at Ivonda P.A.G Secondary School.
The classrooms have been completed and ready for use. They cost Sh1.56 million and will ease congestion at the school.
“The classrooms will help the school during the reopening to comply with the requirement of having 15 to 25 learners per classroom,” Matemba said when he handed over the project.
He said some students had been forced to learn under a tree, a situation that forced him to act.
Matemba is also helping build an administration block and laboratory at the same school with the help of other well-wishers.
“I was motivated by Governor Oparanya who challenged us to give back to society. We have an obligation to uplift the lives of our people and the education sector is one area we can support,” he said.
Principal Francis Agala said the school had four classrooms which were not enough for the learners.
“We still need more classrooms because the school is expanding. We appreciate the good gesture by Dr Matemba because we are confident that when schools reopen we will be able to resume learning,” said Agala.
