The Vihiga government has set aside Sh117 million to rehabilitate the county roads that were destroyed during the heavy downpour in the past few months.

The prolonged rains countrywide left most roads impassable.

Transport and Infrastructure executive Henry Lumbasio on Tuesday said the county will give priority to those roads that have been totally destroyed.

Governor Wilber Ottichilo had earlier promised that once the rains subside, the county would rehabilitate the roads.

Ottichilo’s made good on his promise after he was challenged by the public before his counterpart Kakamega counterpart Governor Wycliffe Oparanya over the poor state of roads in the area.

“Currently we are evaluating the contractors who will take up the job of repairing those roads. Now the county has the cash to do the work. This time we won’t have any problem in paying them once the work is done,” Lumbasio said.

He said the roads have been clustered for easy supervision.

“Ward-based roads will take time before we start implementing them due to the huge pending bills we have,” he added.

The CEC urged Vihiga people to distinguish between the roads under the county, the Kenya National Highway Authority and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority.

He said the county has no power to undertake roads under KeRRA and KeNHA.

Lumbasio urged the two state agencies to ensure the work done is of quality.
