Luyha leaders have been urged to shelve their 2022 presidential ambitions and support Deputy President William Ruto’s bid.

National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale said ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetang’ula and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya should back Ruto because he has the "interest of the country at heart".

Speaking during a fundraiser in aid of the Muslim community consortium in Kimwanga market, Bumula constituency, Duale said that Ruto’s presidential bid is unstoppable.

He said the only person with "countrywide support" is Ruto.

“Ruto has really stood with this country. He has fought many wars, he has been criticised far and wide, but he has remained steadfast in serving this country, he should be supported to lead this country in 2022,” he said.

The Garissa Town MP said that the disunity in Luhya land can’t guarantee any leader from within to become the President because of being overambitious and not uniting their communities.

“You saw it during the Kibra by-election. Mudavadi’s candidate got 5,000 votes while Ford Kenya managed a paltry 260 votes. This clearly shows how the Luhya nation is divided. If they had picked one candidate and supported him, things could be different,” Duale said.

National Assembly Chief Whip, who is also the Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali, urged Kenyans to support Ruto’s presidential bid.

“He is the only leader who has the interest of Kenyans at heart. He does not cause divisions and listens to each of us,” Washiali said.

Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga and his Matungu counterpart Bishop Justus Murunga also supported Ruto's 2022 presidency. He said Kenyans should make a wise decision.

“Ruto doesn’t discriminate. He works for all Kenyans and is not self-centred. He understands well what Kenyans are going through and is ready to fix things once he ascends to power,” Mabonga said.
