• Programme factored in their 2019-20 strategic plan
• Will make ice blocks that will be sold to fish traders within and outside Busia county
Members of a beach management unit in Port Victoria, Budalang'i, have launched a programme to pay fees for needy children in Bunyala subcounty.
Speaking to the Star at Omena beach, secretary Omondi Ndeke said they have paid first term fees for Sylvia Nerima, 15.
The orphaned girl joined Form 1 at St Cecilia Namenya Girls' Secondary School. The unit also bought her all school requirements.
Ndeke said in a recent meeting they unanimously resolved to establish a special programme to pay fees for poor students, especially those whose parents are in the fish business.
He said the programme has been factored in their 2019-20 strategic plan. They will make ice blocks to be sold to fish traders within and outside Busia county.
Ndeke said the unit has bought land to build an ice plant and a modern public toilet. The land was bought with revenue collected daily from the fish traders.
Nerima thanked the committee for offering to pay her fees, saying she had lost hope of joining a secondary school,
