Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and his Bungoma counterpart Moses Wetang’ula are not the spokesmen of the Luhya, an MP has said.

Speaking during a football tournament in Mungore on Monday, Bumula MP Bonface Otsiula accused the two of lying to residents and undermining other Western leaders.

"Who appointed these leaders Luhya spokespersons?” he said.

“Let them tell you what they did when they were in government that they want now to purport to do when they are in the opposition,” he said.

He said the Luhya community has no political bigwigs, as leaders were popularly elected by different voting blocs.

Otsiula said Kenya is a democratic nation and everyone has a right to choose their political affiliation.

He said as a Jubilee-affiliated legislator, he is keen to work with the government for the sake of development as it is "likely to retain power".

He said Wetang'ula and Khalwale are "backstabbing" leaders who want to change the living standards of the Luhya.

Otsiula said the two should not claim that joining Jubilee is betraying the Luhya nation, yet they support Cord leader Raila Odinga, who is not a Luhya.

“Both President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila are not Luhyas,” he said.

“So the question of betraying Luhyas should not arise.”
