Kapsabet-Eldoret highway was barricaded on Saturday by angry residents of Segut village, Chepterit location who demanded the arrest of suspects linked to the murder of a doctor.

Public service Vehicles plying Eldoret, Kapsabet-Kisumu, Kericho and Kisii were forced to take alternative muddy rural routes to avoid using the busy highway as residence lite bonfire.

Irate residents were reacting to an incident in which a man aged 19-year-old showed up and confessed to having been part of a group of people hired to ferry a body of a doctor and dump it in the nearby swamp.

The medic, Dr Caleb Tanui had been reported missing and his decomposing body was found along King’wal swamp a week later, about a Kilometer from his house.

He had gone missing during Easter weekend in April days after arriving home from Narok where he was a consultant surgeon at the county referral hospital.

On Saturday, the man showed up at the deceased home and confessed to having been hired to assist to remove the body of the deceased from his house and dump it in a swamp together with six other people.

Angry villagers on hearing of the confession barricaded the road accusing investigators from the DCI in Kapsabet of cover-ups and not using the overwhelming evidence given to them.

The residents demanded that all the suspects be arrested and made to face murder charges as it was clear since the discovery of the doctor’s remains that he was murdered.

They appealed to the director DCI Mohammed Amin to dispatch a homicide team to start fresh investigations into the death of the late Tanui.

Subsequently, following the confession, Nandi central police commander Doris Chemos revealed that three people among them the deceased wife had been arrested and were helping police with the investigation.

She said the suspect who confessed was likely to be placed as a state witness in the prosecution of the case that puzzled and devastated the residents of Chepterit location.

According to police, the deceased could have been murdered by suffocation and the body could have been in his house for at least two days as the killers tried to find a way of disposing of it.

“The suspect confessed to have ferried my cousin’s body in the wee hours with other Six people…they wrapped it with a blanket,” Jepkoech, a cousin to the doctor said.

As soon as police announced the arrest of the suspects and that more would be arrested, the protesting residents danced and allowed the free flow of traffic 6 hours later.

The doctor left three children.
