Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has offered to sponsor a girl who is living with disability to pursue her Junior secondary school education in Turkana.
Christine Ekusi,14, sat her KPSEA examination at Katapakori Primary School in Turkana Central but failed to join Junior secondary because of her condition and financial shortcomings.
The physically challenged girl was called to Comboni Catholic Mission School situated about 30km away from her village.
She failed to join because she was unable to walk the long distance and her poor parents could not afford to pay for her fees and other school requirements.
Ekusi lost a leg years back and uses metallic crutches to go to school which she said hurt and makes her uncomfortable.
"As a family, we are sponsoring Christine Ekusi who had a lot of challenges going to school. She’s not able to walk to school and she was even dropping out of school but as a family, my wife took the responsivity and ensured that Ekusi gets back to school for her studies in a boarding school,” Koskei said.
He said after the visit, Ekusi joined Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School in Lodwar on Saturday.
The Head of Public Service said his family has also adopted ten other children who they will sponsor until they complete their education.
He said that the girl child is disadvantaged in Turkana because they are not taken to school and are valued as an asset when married off.
"The best inheritance a parent can give a child is education because it equalises and it opens doors. It also uplifts the standards of the community they come from," he said.
Koskei urged the parents to release the children to go school before the government starts to enforce it.
Margy Kosgei, wife to Koskei said when the story of Ekusi was featured on Citizen Tv, she asked her husband if they could sponsor the girl and he agreed.
"Citizen Tv had highlighted the plight of a girl who failed to join Junior secondary school because of her condition. I asked my husband if we could support her and he agreed,” she said.
She said the only way to support the community is through taking children to school and "I’m supporting girls because I belong to the women's tribe."
Ekusi appreciated the support from Koskei's family and promised to work hard to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor to save lives in Turkana.
