How Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif met his death in Kenya

It all began with the stealing of a vehicle in Starehe, Nairobi.

Kenya police occurrence book report has explained how Pakistani national and journalist Arshad Mohammed Shariff, 50, met his death on the Magadi/Kiserian Road Sunday night.

Police in Magadi, in an elaborate report made after the 9 pm incident on Sunday, said Sharif was shot by the General Service Unit officers after his driver failed to stop at a random roadblock.

 
 

The slain Pakistani journalist, the police say, was fatally shot while he was being driven in a motor vehicle registration number KDG 200M.

The random roadblock had been mounted near the GSU training college along the Kiserian/Magadi Road.

The police say the deceased was in the company of his brother Khurram Ahmed as they drove back to Nairobi.

Reasons for shooting

“It started when officers from DCI in Starehe, Nairobi, circulated a report of theft of a motor vehicle/abduction vide OB 70/23/10/2022 that, one Douglas Wainaina parked his motor vehicle registration number KDJ 700F outside an electrical shop and left his son namely Duncan Kamau inside the said vehicle,” the report said.

The report further said when the owner of the said motor vehicle returned, he found his car missing.  

“He reported the said incident at Pangani Police Station where the officers located the son at the Olosuritia ACK Church within Kiserian,” the Magadi police said in their report.

He (the child) was also located on the Kiserian Dam estate and later at the Olepolos Hills, the police said.

The shooting incident was reported in the Magadi police station vide OB 14/23/10/2022 at 22.00hrs that along Kuenia Farm/Kamukuru murram road, a shooting incident involving GSU officers had occurred and one, foreigner had been killed. 

DCI alert

“The DCI officers from Starehe sub-county alerted the officer in charge at the GSU Training School in Magadi who acted appropriately,” the report says.

The report further said the scene was visited by SCPC Kajiado West, OC, DCI, Kiserian and the OCS, Magadi Police Station together with the scenes of crime personnel from Kajiado North sub-county.

“From the scene, near Tinga Market, it was established that Ahmed and his brother, now deceased, were driving along Kuenia-Kamukuru rough road,” the report stated.

The report stated that the deceased and his brother reached the Kiserian-Magadi road, and found the road blocked using small stones and they decided to pass them.  

“It was then when they heard gunshots towards their vehicle directed from the front and rear. They did not stop and proceeded with the journey,” the report said.  

The report said Khurram, also known as Naqar Ahmed, who resides at Tinga was called and informed about the incident. 

Gun Wound

“He advised them to pass his place and on arrival at the main gate found his brother had died, with a gunshot wound in the head, which had penetrated from the back of his head and exited at the front side of his head,” the Magadi police report said. 

Upon scrutiny of the said motor vehicle, the report said, it had a bullet hole on the left side of the windscreen on the side the deceased was sitting.

Two bullet holes, it added, were on the rear left back screen, one bullet hole on the rear right door, and four holes right side of the boot and the front right tyre had been depleted. 

The Pakistan nationals told the police that they are developers and reside in Nairobi.

The scene was documented and the body was taken to Chiromo mortuary awaiting postmortem.
