Both Bartoo and Sitienei each defeated more than 10 male aspirants during the UDA primaries.

Three women won MP seats in the male-dominated North Rift counties of Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu and Nandi.

Professor Phyllis Bartoo defeated two-time MP Sila Tiren in Moiben constituency, where the later was vying as an independent.

In Turbo, Janet Sitienei of UDA also survived a strong showing by ODM to win in the constituency that is home to DP William Ruto.

Sitienei, who will be serving a second term, defeated Sam Mugo of ODM.

Both Bartoo and Sitienei each defeated more than 10 male aspirants during the UDA primaries and also did the same in the August 9 elections.

“Being re-elected as MP is a major milestone for me as a woman because it shows the people of Turbo have strong confidence in me as a leader”, Sitienei said.

She said she was happy that many women especially at the governor level had been elected unlike during previous elections.

“It shows that our capacity as women in leadership has improved hence the confidence in us by voters,” she said.

Bartoo said although she was a newcomer in politics she was proud that voters had given her chance to serve as MP.

In Moiben, Bartoo faced many challenges as she was targeted by opponents using propaganda to profile her.

“Our people have shown that they have risen above petty propaganda and what they want is good leadership. Having been elected I will serve with dedication focusing on challenges affecting my constituents,” she said.

In Nandi, former aide to DP Ruto Mary Ann Keittany also defeated outgoing MP Cornel Serem who was defending on an independent ticket. Keittany had defeated Serem and others in the UDA primaries.

Keittany is also a newcomer in politics but had previously been involved in community work in the region leading her to politics.

“I'm happy to have been elected and I believe working with the people we will achieve a lot not only for Aldai but also for Nandi county”, she said.

Other women in leadership in the region will include Nandi Deputy Governor Dr Yulita Mitei who was re-elected with her boss while in Elgeyo Markwet Dr Grace Cheserek will also serve as deputy governor  to UDAs Wisley Rotich.
