Children safer when poll emotions subside — Kajiado parents

They welcome new school reopening date of August 15, instead of August 11

In Summary

• Ministry of Education said date changed because vote tallying could still be going on as late as Friday. Violence sometimes occurs after results announced.

• Ministry also took everyone by surprise by abruptly closing schools to be turned into polling centres.

Kajiado parents have welcomed the change in school reopening dates from August 11 to 15, saying political temperatures will have cooled and children will be secure.

A cross-section of parents in Isinya town, Kajiado East, said the extra days will ensure their children travel to school when political temperatures have subsided.

They will also have more time to raise fees.

"I expect presidential results to be announced at the latest Friday and I am sure by Monday next week, operations will have gone back to normal," Jane Kariuki said.

She said since some regions usually experience violence after general election, it's prudent to gauge political temperatures before allowing children back in school.

Parent Kipainoi Lemein said the extension of the midterm break gives him more time to work and raise fees for his three children.

"I have two children in primary schools and one in secondary school. Due to the drought, I haven't been able to clear their fees as I depend on livestock sales. but they don't fetch much now," Lemein said.

In a press release by the Education Cabinet secretary George Magoha early Wednesday, the Education ministry said all basic education institutions will open on August 15, not August 11, as earlier announced.

"We have been informed that tallying of ballots may still be ongoing on the aforementioned date (August 11)," it said. "Therefore, following further consultations, I  convey the government's decision that basic education institutions will reopen from Monday, August 15."
