Following the death of four demonstrators after a standoff with officers from the General Service Unit in Masimba, Kajiado county, on Thursday, governor Joseph Lenku has condemned the use of live bullets by security officers.

While condoling with family members of the four people killed, Lenku condemned the police action adding that they should not have used live bullets on the innocent demonstrators.

“I pass my condolences to the families of the four people who have been shot dead at Masimba, along the Nairobi- Mombasa highway, during picketing over the increased killing of people by wildlife in Kajiado East,” said governor Lenku.

It is unfortunate, he said, that lives were lost in such circumstances.

“The police should desist from using excessive force when trying to maintain law and order in circumstances like today's,” said Lenku.

The governor, further, said the deaths could have been avoided with a little more understanding that the local communities are getting frustrated by the loss of lives in human/conflicts.

“I also pray for a quick recovery for those who have been seriously injured and are undergoing treatment in hospital,” said Lenku.

He called upon the local communities to keep calm as the state probes the matter and seeks a way forward from the National Police Service.
