Narok North MP Moitalel ole Kenta has dismissed claims the Maasai community is supporting UDA and Deputy President William Ruto for the presidency.

He said the community is solidly behind ODM leader Raila Odinga. Kenta said those spreading rumours of UDA's popularity in Narok have missed the point.

The legislator made the remarks at the weekend in Nchura, Narok North constituency, during a thanksgiving ceremony for Patrick Kiok, who got a government job.

“The Maasai community is fully behind Raila Odinga and his Azimio La Umoja initiative,” Kenta said.

The Narok North MP said leaders should be honest and tell people the truth on development matters.

He said the community will support Raila for the presidency, saying he has always stood with the community whenever they face challenges.

“This country needs credible leaders like Raila who will steer the country to economic prosperity,” Kenta said.

He said the DP’s narrative will not change the country, and instead it will reverse the efforts made by many Kenyans in investing in education.

Kenta also accused DP Ruto of being insincere in his conservation efforts towards Mau Forest.

He said the DP has always wanted the illegal settlers to stay in the forest and his change of tune now is personal and is trying to pursue his own agenda by using the community.

The MP said only Uhuru and Raila should be lauded for championing conservation efforts in the Mau forest.

“It is quite ironic for the DP to claim that he supports the restoration of Mau forest, yet when the illegal settlers were removed from the forest, he was the one who was behind the putting of camps for these evictees. He should know that we are clever and we know what is going on,” Kenta said.

The ODM legislator said Raila stood with the community during the evictions.

“Raila was fought left, right and centre because of Mau Forest and that led to his losing the presidency in 2013. We will continue to support him until he achieves his dream for this country,” he said.

On Friday, DP Ruto toured Narok North constituency and assured residents that no evictee will return to the forest if he is elected president next year.

Ruto said the Mau issue is a done deal and told his opponents to look for another agenda as the state has already put measures toward conserving the biggest water tower.

“We are committed to conserving the forest and we have put in place plans to ensure it is fenced to stop further destruction, encroachment and illegal loggers,” he said.

The DP spoke during a prayer meeting at Covenant Church International in Osasimwa.
