Thome Boys High School in Laikipia Central has been closed indefinitely after a Form 2 student died following a dormitory fire on Thursday.

The dormitory was gutted by the midnight fire as students were sleeping.

Laikipia county commissioner Joseph Kanyiri said the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

Three weeks ago, students at the school went on the rampage and destroyed property.

This is the fourth school in the county to report a fire incident in recent weeks. Others are Loise Girls’ High, Muramati secondary and St Augustine Sirma Secondary School.

“Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation are on the ground. Let us not speculate on what transpired,” Kanyiri said.

The administrator, who condoled with the bereaved family and the school community, warned students against arson.

He warned students who do not want to study to refrain from causing havoc. Kanyiri said the school committee will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute students found culpable.

He said some learners were over 18 years old and can be charged in court.

“Schools are public properties. Let us not hide by saying the fire was caused by electric fault without proper investigations having been completed,” Kanyiri said.

He cautioned school managers and parents to watch out for signs that could preempt the destruction of school property.

The body of the student was taken to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary
