Prime suspect in Kitengela killings to be detained for 4 more days

A court on Friday ordered the prime suspect in the Kitengela 4 murders to be detained for another four days to allow further investigations.

That was the second time the lone suspect, Benson Melonyie ole Mungai and a resident of Kitengela, appeared before Resident Magistrate Becky Cheloti.

Cheloti ordered the suspect to be locked up at Kitengela police station until September 1st when his case will start afresh.

The prosecution told the court there are crucial links they are following regarding the arrest and production of other suspects in court.

Mungai, with others not in court, is a key suspect in the murder of two brothers; Fredrick Mureithi, 30, and Victor Mwangi, 25.

The other two are Mike George, 29, and Nicholas Musa, 28.

All of them were killed on the evening of August 8 as they went out to look for food to cook for supper.

Soon after the production of the sole suspect in court and a ruling made by the magistrate, the mother of the two brothers, Lucy Wanjiru, protested outside the courts the manner in which the police were handling the case.

“How can the police claim they only arrested one man in a case where four young and strong men were killed? This cannot happen because there are indications the four were killed by a larger number of people,” said Wanjiru.

Wanjiru, who is a businesswoman based in the UK, flew into the country one week ago to bury her only two sons.

Meanwhile, detectives are investigating a case in which about 500 men in Kitengela and took an oath to keep secret the names of those who were involved in the matter.

The meeting that took place more than one and a half weeks ago is alleged to have been attended by elders who threatened to curse whoever will disclose to the police the killers.

Soon after that meeting which took place in the Old Kitengela region, Mungai was arrested.
