COMMITTEE OF EMINENT PERSONS

Electoral college to pick candidate to face Lenku in 2022

Former NTSA boss Meja, ex-governor Nkedianye, MPs Tobiko and Metito, and former Olkejuado county council chairman Kores to team up.

In Summary

• Meja said the arrangement was agreed upon by four candidates.

• But Lenku has on many occasions said former governor Nkedianye is the only one who can give him a run for his money.

A committee of eminent persons in Kajiado will set up an electoral college to pick a candidate to face off against Governor Joseph ole Lenku in next year's election.

The 'opposition' candidate will be picked from the five hopefuls who have declared their interest in the seat.

They are former NTSA boss Francis Meja, former governor Joseph Nkedianye, Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko, former Olkejuado county council chairman Tarayia ole Kores and Kajiado South MP Katoo ole Metito.

By Monday, it had not been confirmed whether Metito had agreed to the arrangement as Meja told the Star the deal was struck by four candidates. Tobiko said she has been talking to Metito.

“We will now be subjected to grilling and elaborate checks by the electoral college to ensure the person to be picked is of high integrity and has the support of the majority,” Meja said.

Meja could not give the exact dates when the electoral college will be established. He, however, said the candidate must be picked before December or latest January.

“We are all talking and everything is moving on well. We will not let down our followers, who are keen on knowing who the candidate will be.”

Those close to the four candidates have indicated that each of them is capable of ousting Lenku in a fair contest.

But Lenku has on many occasions said Nkedianye is the only one who can give him a run for his money.

Tobiko said they have a credible team capable of dethroning Lenku. She has been receiving delegates at her home from all corners of the county.

Meja, Metito, Nkedianye and Kores have also been receiving delegates.

While the five have concentrated their campaigns on meeting delegates, Lenku has been traversing the county meeting the electorate.
