Cane farmers in Transmara West, Narok county, have complained of delayed harvesting of their produce by a sugar miller.

At least 5,000 acres of mature cane in the vast region are waiting to be harvested by Transmara Sugar Company.

Sugarcane takes about one year to mature but the farmers say their produce has been in farms for more than two years.

Kenya National Federation of Sugarcane Farmers national Treasurer Stephen Naruba said on Sunday the delay is causing huge losses.

"It is painful for them," he said.

Factory chief executive Fredrick North Coombs did not pick calls to respond to the farmers concerns.

Transmara Sugar Company was started in 2011. It has stayed afloat despite the challenges facing the sugar sector in the country.

In 2018-19, the factory crushed about 800,000 tonnes of cane.

This was an increment from the previous financial year when 578,000 tonnes of cane were crushed.
