Turkana county reported six new cases of Covid-19 on Monday at Nadapal border.

The county now has seven cases.

All the six new cases were from truckers, who have been in Nadapal border entry point for the last five days.

Speaking to press on Tuesday at Lodwar county headquarters, Turkana Deputy Governor Peter Lotethiro said, "All the six confirmed cases are among the 19 truckers who were picked up by our surveillance team at Nadapal, at the Kenya- South Sudan border post."

He said the six patients are Kenyan truck drivers from Mombasa county who had gone to Uganda via Malaba, traversing Uganda crossing the Uganda-South Sudan border at Elegu-Nimule respective.

He said they reentered Kenya from South Sudan via Nadapal border entry point.

"The six truckers have been appropriately counselled and notified of their results. Since they were tested here, they will be isolated at Lopiding Level 4 Hospital until they recover," he said.

The DG said the teams manning the border applied the provided protocols strictly and picked up samples which were analysed at the Moi Teaching Referral Hospital (MTRH).

Lotethiro has assured residents the truckers had minimal contact with residents of Turkana since they were initially placed at the Nadapal border quarantine facility as they awaited their results.

He said the medical team in collaboration with security agencies are in the process of tracking all the possible contacts and placing them in quarantine facilities as required by Covid-19 protocols.

"As a result of tightened attestation requirements in Malaba and ensuing truckers congestion... Truckers lately have preferred returning to Kenya via Nadapal border point and we expect many more to be coming via this route," he said.

Lotethiro has urged all truckers to ensure they have been tested for Covid-19 and they should provide their virus free certificate before entering Turkana.

"All truckers must ensure they have been tested and are in possession of Covid-19 negative results and an attestation letter. They are also required to undertake another test every 14 days," he said.
